During the long nine months of pregnancy, I spent a ton of time researching what to invest in, what to have stocked in my nursery and which brands were better than the other. I read blog post after blog post, pinned ALL the Pinterest pins, and compared and contrasted items until I was blue in the face. Despite all of my efforts and lots of great advice, I still ended up purchasing several items that I didn’t need and used several brands I didn’t like. On the other hand, I also found several random must have baby items I absolutely adored. I say “random” here because there is really no rhyme or reason as to why I put them on this list other than to say, “they are AWESOME and I need them in my life”. These are items that have stood the test of time. Even as my daughter turns 13 months old, I am still using these products religiously and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon!
Did I use a million other baby products along the way? Absolutely. Do I love most of them? Absolutely. However, these are products I either didn’t know about, didn’t believe I needed, or purchased late in the game. So basically, if you are on the fence about purchasing any of the items listed, let this be your little shove in the right direction. I love them, and I’m sure you will too!

Must Have Baby Item #1: FridaBaby Nose Frida (Nasal Aspirator)
At first glance, I thought this was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen. Hence, why I did not purchase it for the first few weeks of my daughter’s life. However, I quickly learned that the bulb syringes they give you at the hospital (and the syringes in those handy dandy emergency kits) are not all they are cracked up to be. Ellianna always had stuff left in her nose and I was really worried about her getting sick. I buckled down and bought the Nose Frida and I can’t believe I didn’t get it sooner. It’s AMAZING! She wasn’t sick the whole first year of her life. I know some of that might be sheer luck or the fact that I’m a germ freak or a combination of both. However, I firmly believe that the Nose Frida played a part in it as well. It’s crazy how much gunk babies have in their noses that you can’t even see! Oh and trust me, there is no way it can get into your mouth. If that was the case, I wouldn’t have that thing in my house.
Must Have Baby Item #2: Robin Spielberg-Beautiful Dreamer: Lullabies for the Parent & Child
I know it seems odd to add lullabies to this list, and maybe it is. However, I had to share because it brings back some of the fondest memories of my daughter over the course of her first year of life. I’m sure piano music isn’t for everyone, but Robin Spielberg isn’t your typical pianist. Her music is absolutely phenomenal and incredibly relaxing. I played this at night for Ellianna when she was first born and I continue to play it as part of her bedtime routine. If you are looking for a good lullaby CD that doesn’t get old after the first two weeks, this is an excellent option. (Also available on iTunes.)
Must Have Baby Item #3: Tubby Todd Bath Products
Who else feels insanely overwhelmed when it comes time to choose proper bath products for your child? Honestly, it’s crazy how much information is circulating about what to buy, what not to buy, what’s true, what’s false, etc. I struggled with this for MONTHS before I finally found the perfect products. Obviously, as a new mom, you want your baby to have the best start in life. That means, making good choices about what you put on your baby’s skin. I had such a hard time figuring out what was good, what was bad and everything in between. My husband and I registered for one brand and hated it because it lacked that “new baby” smell. Then, we purchased another brand but wasn’t feeling very happy with some of the reviews. Finally, I discovered Tubby Todd. Not only are the products totally safe to use, but they also smell amazing and last forever. When I say forever, I mean like a reallllllllly long time. I use one bottle of shampoo/body wash on Ellianna for 3-4 months. That means I can justify spending the extra money for the products upfront. In addition, Ellianna has amazing skin and I attribute most of that to Tubby Todd. The products are so good my husband has started recommending them to children that come through the ER with eczema. The results are amazing.
Must Have Baby Item #4: Gathre Mat
It may seem silly to splurge on something like a high chair mat. Why would you need that when you can simply clean the floors? I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to vacuum and mop every single day. I’m also a clean freak and wouldn’t be able to stand it if I had food all over the place. Therefore, the Gathre mat is an excellent option for me. It is made of high-quality material and has multiple uses. For example, you can use it outside or in public places as a clean place for your baby to lie down. You can also use it as a changing pad. Finally, you can use it underneath your highchair to catch food debris and spills. It’s versatility, durability, and modern style is what convinced me to spend the money and I’m really glad that I did.
Must Have Baby Item #5: Silicone Bib
You won’t use this product very often when your child is first born, but it’s a wonderful option to have on hand for when they do start eating. I’m obsessed with Ellie’s silicone bibs. They catch EVERYTHING and they clean off so easily. It reduced the amount of laundry I have, the messes I need to clean up and the stains I have to work hard to get rid of. It’s a must have item for us!
Must Have Baby Item #6: Lavender Essential Oil
My husband calls my essential oils my voodoo magic (obviously he’s joking). If you use essential oils, I’m sure you have heard something along those lines before. Don’t let that deter you from using lavender every chance you get. When Ellie was first born I was wary of using a diffuser next to her bassinet so I mixed a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil with water and sprayed it on her mattress before I rocked her to sleep. It was so helpful! Now that she’s a bit older, I also put it on her feet, behind her ears and on her chest after her bath. Since I’m a Perfectly Posh consultant, I use the “Sleepy Sleep” stick to make things a little faster and easier, however, you can simply rub lavender essential oil mixed with a carrier oil on the skin!
Must Have Baby Item #7: Bathtub Kneeling Pad
Holy smokes, no one told me how hard it is on the knees when you are kneeling over a tub. A bathtub kneeling pad is a MUST. You will spend a lot of time bathing your babe and you should be comfortable while doing so. Spend a few extra bucks and get yourself one that covers the top of the tub too. It saves the elbows!
Must Have Baby Item #8: Sound Machine
I was so against a sound machine, in the beginning, it wasn’t even funny. We spent the first seven months of Ellie’s life without one and it was a PAIN IN THE NECK. I was so worried that she would use it as a crutch and wouldn’t be able to fall asleep without the extra noise. Now I realize how silly that was. It’s not that she can’t fall asleep, it’s simply that my husband and I had to tip toe around our tiny little house like a bunch of mice. We couldn’t hear the TV, couldn’t clean up from dinner, and definitely, couldn’t have guests in our home. Now, with the sound machine (or fan, or air purifier) we can actually live like normal adults at bedtime! It’s like a whole new world for us. Do yourself a favor. Buy a sound machine.
Must Have Baby Item #9: Cloth Diaper Burp Cloths
I didn’t think burp cloths were that important until I brought home a baby that vomited all over me every time she ate. Literally, all over me. I think our record number of changes (right down to the bra and underwear) was eight. Needless to say, we went through all kinds of burp cloths and several different brands. My favorite, by far, is the Gerber cloth diapers. You need those in your life. Even if your child doesn’t profusely vomit all over you after he/she eats, you will still use them all the time. If worse comes to worse, you have yourself a great cleaning rag when it’s all said and done!
What did you Think?
Those are my top ten “random” must have baby items that I couldn’t live without. If and when we are blessed with another little babe, I’ll be sure to have each of these things in my arsenal. I’m sure there are a ton of other products I will desperately need, however, these are the things I questioned and ended up needing despite my previous “know it all” attitude. You live and you learn, right?
What must have baby items do you swear by? What products did you THINK you could live without?
